Big Brother Mouse
An introduction to Lao sign language

The Snail and the Frog

This brief story tells about a frog and snail who learn to get along. It was conceived and drawn by Suliphone, a deaf artist on our staff who has given a one-lesson introduction to Lao sign language to thousands of children at our book parties.

Eleven pages illustrate enough sign language vocabulary so that children can learn to tell the story with their hands. Many Lao children are deaf; this book introduces the concept that there are other ways to communicate.
