Big Brother Mouse
Life in a Khmu Village

I am Xai

Xai is a typical boy. His family is Khmu, the largest ethnic minority in Laos.

Large photographs and one-sentence captions tell about his everyday activities: Collecting firewood, carrying water, fishing, playing in the river with his friends.

While it is enjoyable for both children and adults from all ethnic groups, it is particularly intended to help young Khmu children who don't use the Lao language in their home, as they enter school and learn to read and speak Lao.

We had the good taste not to show it in this book, but I happen to know that Khmu boys also like to catch mice and eat them!
