Teacher workshop: Today's teachers in Laos didn't have books like ours when they were children. They probably had no books at all. They have no experience using books in class. So we're looking for ways to provide teacher training, about the new teaching opportunities that are created by fun, engaging, and educational books.

This event was sponsored by Planet Wheeler Foundation (Australia) and Dawn Wheatley (United States). Thank you!

This month we had a big opportunity. Some of the best teachers from northern Laos were coming to the Teacher Training College to upgrade their skills. We were invited to hold a one-day workshop about using books in class.

We held four one-day workshops in July, with 150 teachers at each one. These were the largest teacher groups we've worked with, but the techniques we developed with smaller groups worked well.

Our emphasis was on reading aloud. It's an effective way to spread a love of books, it's a social activity that both teachers and children enjoy, and we've published many books that work well for this purpose.

We divided into 3 groups. We demonstrated read-aloud techniques, then they each selected a picture book, and got familiar with it. When they were ready, they practiced reading to other teachers.

Then, for more realistic practice, we went to a rural village. We had already invited village children to come for storytime. The teachers relaxed the kids with some games, then read aloud to their attentive listeners. It was fun for the children; it also gave the teachers confidence that they could hold their audience's attention.

At the end, as at nearly all of our events, all the kids got to select a book of their own.
