Teacher workshop: Today's teachers in Laos didn't have books like ours when they were children. They probably had no books at all. They have no experience using books in class. So we're looking for ways to provide teacher training, about the new teaching opportunities that are created by fun, engaging, and educational books.

This event was sponsored by the Cubit Family (Australia) and Dawn Wheatley (United States). Thank you!

In July, we provided teacher training for 600 of the best teachers in northern Laos, who had come to Luang Prabang for further education during the summer break.

Our focus was how to use books in the classroom, with a special emphasis on reading aloud. We provided some tips and demonstrations: Change your voice. Pause occasionally for dramatic effect. Make eye contact with the audience.

Each teacher practiced with a few other teachers, then we went to several rural villages outside Luang Prabang for real-life experience.

At the end, every child got to choose a book of their own. We also gave two sets of books to each teacher: 30 for personal use, and 40 for the class.

The cost of books, lunch for all participants, transportation, and staff time made this an expensive month, but we feel it was well worth it. There is now a highly motivated teacher in each of some 500 villages -- about 6% of the rural villages in Laos. They're excited about reading, they've got books to read and share, and they've learned skills for transmitting their excitement to students.
