Young-adult scholarship: For our young adult program, we look for candidates in their late teens, sometimes early twenties, who are eager to learn but haven't had much real opportunity. Typically they come from rural areas and their families barely make ends meet already, so thanks to donors we offer a full scholarship, including room and board and a small monthly stipend for incidentals.

This student was sponsored by Robin Millar (Canada) and Dave Schaller (United States). Thank you!

Most of our young adult students this year come from north of Luang Prabang. Cheng grew up in a Hmong community in the other direction, between Luang Prabang and Vientiane.

We stopped to visit his family, village, and surrounding area when we took a trip to the Plain of Jars in May. Here he relaxes in a new park, built on top a mountain near his village; and stands by a tunnel where villagers hid during the heavy American bombings of 1964-73.

Then, back at Big Sister Mouse, he plays the geography game "10 days in Asia" with Dar and two of our younger students. We use games frequently. Here, four players compete to see who can put together a trip through the world's biggest continent. It teaches strategy, and quickly builds up a better sense of geography. Finally, he practices at a teacher training workshop.

Not shown: When Cheng started classes with us he already much more English than any of our other students, the result of a great deal of intense study when he lived with his parents in the countryside. He hopes to become a teacher.
