Discovery festival: In wealthy countries, young people get a range of experiences that that contribute to their personal and mental development: Going to museums. Playing board games. Reading for pleasure. Watching movies. Expressing their opinion in a group discussion about something of significance. Taking fun day trips to the countryside. Experimenting with science kits. Solving puzzles of many sorts. Learning to speak in public. Such experiences are much rarer for young people here. For several years, the "Mouse Experience" has provided our staff with opportunities to enjoy and learn from these and other activities. Our "Discovery Days" take this experience to schools and youth centers.

This event was sponsored by the United States Embassy in Laos (Lao PDR) and Global Fund for Children (United States). Thank you!

The United States Embassy and Global Fund for Children co-sponsored a week of events in nation's capital: 4 days in high schools outside the Vientiane, then a weekend festival in the heart of the city.

The embassy also donated a solar telescope, and we were delighted that U.S. Ambassador Karen Stewart could drop by and see it in use.

A question-and-answer game was fun, and also called attention to interesting facts that can be found in our books, which were available for reading, and for purchase at half-price.

Among several new activities this week, our jigsaw puzzle maps were particularly popular. Even when most kids went home for lunch, there was always a group trying to figure out just where in Southeast Asia a particular piece of Malaysia should go.
