Logo of Big Brother Mouse, publishing books in Laos

7 February, 2013, Nameuangkang Village, Luang Prabang Province, Laos

Book party: At book parties we read from books, play games, and sing songs. At the end of each book party, every student gets to choose a book, usually the first book they've ever owned. Then we give more to the school. Our book parties have two goals. First, we get children excited about books. (Previously, most of them had seen textbooks, but never a book they were eager to read.) Second, we observe closely, to see what books are most avidly read, what's needed, and what techniques help spread a love of reading.

This event was sponsored by Tammachat Natural Textiles (Canada). Thank you!

In the last picture, the girl on the left is absorbed in The Hungry Frog. It's just 8 pages long, with one sentence per page, a perfect size for new readers.

It's a good size for new writers, too. This book was written by a young woman named Khamla, who had no prior writing experience when she started working at Big Brother Mouse. After several writing workshops, in which we looked at very short books that had been published in English, she came up with an original story that has entertained readers of all ages.
