Support for a reading room: Repeated visits from our staff, to read aloud, bring new books, and conduct other activities, make a big difference in the success of a village reading program. Sometimes we'll go for just 2 hours; reaching several villages in a single day. Other times, we've had two or three members of our team go for 3 to 5 days, staying with a family. That provides time for many activities, plus in-depth discussions with the reading room volunteer, and others in the villages.

This event was sponsored by Planet Wheeler Foundation (Australia). Thank you!

We've helped nearly 200 rural Lao villages set up reading rooms. These are based in the homes of volunteers who are eager to promote reading and education, but have no experience with books.

So we go back repeatedly to take see how they're doing, take new books, and maintain enthusiasm. During the summer, when schools are closed, the book party teams will spend 3 to 5 days in a single village.

Unfortunately, summer months are also the rainy months. We travel by van, 4-wheel drive, boat, or foot, whatever's seems best. Usually we guess right, but not always.
