Logo of Big Brother Mouse, publishing books in Laos

5 June, 2012, Northern Laos, Laos

Teacher workshop: Today's teachers in Laos didn't have books like ours when they were children. They probably had no books at all. They have no experience using books in class. So we're looking for ways to provide teacher training, about the new teaching opportunities that are created by fun, engaging, and educational books.

This event was sponsored by Sasha Alyson. Thank you!

The organization "Save the Children" has a strong presence in Lao in two areas that overlap with Big Brother Mouse: Education and Health. We've worked with them on teacher training, in the past; and their experienced medical team has given us valuable guidance in publishing health materials.

Among other programs, Save the Children provides extensive training for health workers in rural areas. Today, we presented 30 nurses and midwives with a selection of books: 50 books for each, including Women's Health, Helping Children Who Are Deaf, Baby Care, and other health-related books, as well as books about other subjects. In addition to the obvious benefits in improving health care, it was also an opportunity for influential people in 30 villages to develop a greater enjoyment of reading, which they can pass along to their neighbors.
