Festival: Where people have had any experience with books in the past, it was usually textbooks, and there's probably no country in the world where textbooks instill a love of reading. So one way that we "make literacy fun" is to hold festivals where people can discover that books are fun, interesting, and useful.

This event was sponsored by Lyle and Agnes Schaller (United States). Thank you!

We're based in Luang Prabang, but most of our work is in rural villages. We had a 2-day festival in the city, so our neighbors can see what we do.

We spent the days reading aloud to children, and also had space for them to quietly browse through books. U.S. Ambassador Karen Stewart came and read to an enthusiastic group. We played games, taught children and adults how to read aloud, then had evening celebrations with a quiz show and traditional dancing. Every child who came got a free book; we gave away more than 2,000 books that weekend.
