Some new approaches to literacy
In 2013 and 2014 Big Brother Mouse introduced two programs that were new for us, and new in Laos.
First, we began setting up daily reading programs in primary schools. Every day, children read a book of their choice, strictly for enjoyment; the goal is for them to build up reading skills, and a love of reading.
Then, we introduced our "I Can Read!" series, which helps children learn the letters, and to enjoy reading stories as soon as they know only a small part of the alphabet.
But these are new approaches in Laos, and teachers sometimes fall back on old habits. This handbook helps teachers implement these programs, and provides testimonials from schools that successfully use them.
