Phiiyamoi

A poor fisherman discovers that someone else is catching his fish. It is the witch, Phiiyamoi. They fight, but he loses and has to marry her. His troubles, however, have only begun.

This traditional Lao folktale may not become a favorite in western kindergartens anytime soon: By the end of the story, Phiiyamoi is snacking on the intestines of her husband's best friend.

But here in Laos, it's our #1 most popular book, and no gorier than "Hansel and Gretel." We've printed it in this new, smaller edition, so we can include it in the selection of books that young readers can choose from, as their very first book, at our school book parties.
